Several area municipalities announce fire bans

May 12, 2022 | 12:00 PM

A number of municipalities in the region have issued fire bans due to the ongoing extremely dry conditions.

The City of Meadow Lake, the RM of Meadow Lake, the RM of Mervin and the RM of Douglas have announced burning bans are currently in place.

All burning permits and fire pit permits are temporarily suspended until further notice.

All fires are prohibited, including fire pits and fireworks. This ban does not apply to propane fire appliances and barbecues.

The RM of Mervin will also allow patio heaters and completely enclosed wood pellet fueled fire pits.

For the City of Meadow Lake and the RM of Meadow Lake, municipalities will notify residents when the fire ban is lifted. People are also asked to check for updates on the respective Facebook Page and through Voyent Alert.

The City of North Battleford and RM of North Battleford also currently have fire bans in place.

People can call the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency and Fire Safety’s Control Burn line at 1-866-404-4911 to receive updates on any municipalities where fire bans are in effect.

They are also recommended to call this number to report their controlled burn for communities where there is no ban in place.

Staying safe

While there is no fire ban in effect in the Town of Battleford, Mayor Ames Leslie is asking residents to make sure they follow the rules to keep everyone safe. He posted on his Facebook Page a reminder to people that in order to have a fire in their backyard they require an approved fire apparatus and approved fire pit permit from town hall.

“Don’t be that guy and ruin it for us all,” Leslie said.
