Pump Track to accommodate many skill levels

Battleford residents recently had an opportunity to take in an information session on plans for the Town of Battleford’s new pump track.

Pump track experts Graham Cooke with Canadian Ramp Company Inc. and Amedeo Gadotti with Velosolutions are involved in the project.

Cooke provided information about the track project during the online event.

“We’re really excited to bring this vision to a reality for your community,” he said.

Organizers gathered input from suggestions received from the town’s public survey.

The asphalt track will allow for a variety of uses, including riding scooters, skateboards, rollerblades, and especially bikes. The over 1,500 square metre track will be somewhat similar to the Martensville, Sask., pump track, but much larger. As well, the track will accommodate a variety of users’ skill levels.

Cooke added the organizers are looking at possibly installing a wall ride as part of the project, for more advanced bike users who want an added challenge, if there is enough interest.

“It just adds a different feature to the park, and it’s kind of new,” he said.

The track will take about three or four weeks to construct this summer.

Cooke noted because the material used will be asphalt, if any cracks develop 10 to 12 years from now, for example, they could be easily repaired.

As far as the location is concerned, Cooke said plans were originally to install the track down by the river area. But organizers are also considering other locations, such as the south end of town instead, where the area is flatter.

Town of Battleford Parks and Recreation manager Jordan Schechtel noted the location of the track has not been totally finalized by council yet.

“The initial location was the River Valley,” he said. “That still is under consideration, but there are difficulties if we were to build it there. We did provide Graham [Cooke] and Amedeo [Gadotti] with some alternative locations, so they could get going on the design process.”

Schechtel added there are no immediate plans to construct a parking lot near the pump track this year.

“It could be something we look at down the road, depending on the usage, and if it’s going to be needed,” he said.

People who didn’t have a chance to see the online information session can still view it here.
