Saskatchewan loses out to Maritimes to host 2023 world juniors: Report

May 5, 2022 | 9:48 AM

It appears Saskatchewan won’t be hosting the 2023 world junior hockey championship.

According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, the International Ice Hockey Federation is to announce Thursday that the tournament will be held in Halifax and Moncton.

It’s the first time since 2003 the event has been held in the Maritimes.

The 2023 world junior tournament was to be held in Novosibirsk, Russia, but the IIHF stripped that country of its hosting rights after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The federation then asked Hockey Canada to find a place to hold the tournament. Regina and Saskatchewan teamed up to put in a bid, which appears to have been unsuccessful.

Saskatchewan has played host to the tournament twice before, in 1991 and 2010.

In March, Tourism Regina and Tourism Saskatoon issued a release saying they were going to bid, but games potentially would have been played in centres like Humboldt, Swift Current, Prince Albert and Moose Jaw as well as Regina and Saskatoon.

“Hosting the world junior championship is where Saskatoon and Regina shine,” Stephanie Clovechok, the chief executive officer for Tourism Saskatoon, said in the release. “Our hosting excellence was demonstrated in 2010 when our two cities hosted the IIHF world junior championship. Hockey Canada reported that they had their highest revenues and attendance to date.

“This is an outstanding opportunity for our cities to come together, initiating growth and distributing economic opportunity throughout the entire province.”
