Four Corner Boxing makes knockout impression at Alberta Golden Gloves

North Battleford’s Four Corner Boxing Club came out swinging over the weekend with two gold medals and a bronze at this year’s Alberta Golden Gloves Championship.

Three athletes from the local club competed at the event held in Edmonton, featuring some of the best boxers at their age group from Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.

Thirteen-year-old, Faizan Dar took home a gold medal defeating British Columbia in the finals, while 16-year-old Daltan Gerstenhofer beat the Saskatchewan provincial champion for gold as well, and 20-year-old John Pekas took home a bronze in the senior ranks.

“It’s a pretty big step for the boxers who went,” owner and coach at Four Corners, Dylin Curiston said. “Out of all the Saskatchewan boxers we’re the only club that managed to bring back gold medals.”

Building on a four golds performance at provincials earlier this month, Curiston said it’s been great to see the club continue their momentum against premier competition from across Western Canada.

“We’re continuing to put North Battleford on the map as far as amateur boxing in Saskatchewan, and now obviously with the golden gloves championship wins, across Canada.” – Dylin Curiston

First established in 2015, Four Corners Boxing spent their first year in Battleford, before relocating across the bridge to North Battleford. During the pandemic shutdown, they then moved to a larger facility in the community to accomodate growing numbers, which Curiston said has only helped them continue to expand.

“We were shutdown for the pandemic a bit longer than we had to, but we took the opportunity to move to a new, bigger facility with much better layout and location,” Curiston said. “Since then we’ve been bringing out many new boxers and taking new people to compete.”

Four Corners Boxing will attend a two-day tournament in Saskatoon towards the end of May, followed by a multi-national tournament in July in Ontario, which could see a few from the local club compete against top talent from Canada and the United States.
