McLurg High School wins wrestling provincials

Amid several rural schools in North West Saskatchewan sending teams to Hoopla 2022, the McLurg Broncs from Wilkie have already earned provincial hardware in wrestling.

Both the boys and girls squads won 3A gold with six athletes taking home individual medals as well. This was the second straight title for the boys team, who won in 2020. Head coach Chris Kent could hardly contain his excitement and pride over the team’s performance.

“It was awesome, knowing how much hard work they put in, to see them stand in the winner’s circle,” he said. “Those boys were all in Grades 9 and 10 back [in 2020], so they could have had a few in a row.”

The competition, hosted by Evan Hardy in Saskatoon, was an open format where boys and girls of various weight classes competed against anyone in any category regardless of school. The points accrued went towards each individual school’s result in their division.

Kent said he was proud to see their team matchup against 5A competitors.

“The team titles we won were divided into small schools, but we beat 90 per cent of the big city schools in total points anyway,” he said.

Their individual winners in various weight categories included gold medalist Darren Toothill, silver medalists Andy Gallernaeult and Kent’s daughter Piper and bronze medalists Cody Bleier, Zara Meier and Scott Huber.

Many members on the team were members of Kent’s club program, Gorilla Factory Wrestling, for years. Seeing their successes, including Meier’s bronze medal win, made him and the parents in attendance emotional.

“When a kid realizes where their possibilities lie and make it a reality, that’s always amazing to me,” Kent said.

And getting to see his daughter Piper earn provincial wins in the years prior to her first high school medal this past weekend has also been special. However, Kent said he’s never surprised seeing these victories and tries to instill that in the athletes as well.

“It’s why I always want them to always be respectful in victory,” he said. “When you don’t overreact, that shows you expect it.”

“Plus, it’s a pretty [tough] sport, physically. You should always show sportsmanship.”

In addition to McLurg, Unity Composite ended up on the boys podium, tying for silver in the 3A category.
