Homicide investigation

Mirasty sentencing in manslaughter case set for April 1

Mar 21, 2022 | 4:00 PM

The man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the Sequin Mooswa homicide investigation is now scheduled to appear at North Battleford Provincial Court April 1 for the judge’s decision.

On Oct. 27, 2020, Keenan Mirasty, 22, of North Battleford entered his plea to unlawfully causing the death of Sequin Mooswa on March 8, 2020 and thereby commit manslaughter. A charge of second-degree murder in the case was stayed once Mirasty pleaded guilty to the lesser charge.

Mirasty who remains in custody recently had a new sentencing hearing on March 9 and 11, 2022, moved up from May 25 of this year set previously. The new hearing was ordered after the Crown and Defence counsels failed to agree on some details in the statement of facts from the original sentencing hearing in August of 2021. The Defence had asserted there was one assault in the kitchen at the time of the offence, while the Crown maintained there was also an assault in the bedroom.

The court confirmed a decision in the case is now set for April 1 at 9:30 a.m. in Courtroom #2.

RCMP previously reported Sequin Mooswa, 22, was found deceased in a home on St. Laurent Drive in North Battleford on March 8, 2020.
