Bear mace spray causes disruption at North Battleford Comprehensive

Mar 8, 2022 | 6:13 PM

Police and paramedics were on scene as a precaution at North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) Tuesday afternoon, after bear mace nearly spread throughout the building.

Around 2:15 p.m., a student reportedly emptied bear mace into a toilet in the boy’s bathroom on the main floor of the school. Staff quickly tried to reduce the spread by closing all doors on the main floor and keeping students in their classrooms for about an hour.

Caretakers were able to clean the area quickly during the wait while emergency services were on standby, communicating with staff. The front doors to the school were opened to help circulate fresh air and after police consultation, evacuation was deemed unnecessary.

When the air had cleared, officers on scene arrested a youth found with the spray in his possession. He was then taken to the station.

In an email to families, NBCHS Principal Jay Nichol thanked students and staff for acting quickly to contain the situation as much as possible, also thanking the authorities and paramedics for their assistance. No other information has been made available at this time.
