Battleford raises Ukrainian flag outside Town Hall

The Town of Battleford is also now flying the vivid blue and yellow Ukrainian flag outside its municipal building.

This follows the City of North Battleford raising it’s own Ukrainian flag last week. During council on Monday, Battleford Mayor Ames Leslie took a moment to acknowledge the people of Ukraine and their struggles, following Russia’s invasion there.

Leslie said he attended the gathering in North Battleford Saturday afternoon to show support for Ukraine, and joined in the peaceful march through the downtown.

“The Town of Battleford is flying the national Ukrainian flag right beside the town flag here at the Town Hall in honour and with thoughts of our Ukrainian friends and family members, and those who still have family in Ukraine,” he said.

“Ukrainians are some of the first settlers within this region. We are definitely grateful and respectful of what they have brought to our community and region.”

Leslie said the town is keeping all the people of Ukraine in its thoughts and prayers, during the ongoing conflicts.

Safe corridors could potentially open today to allow civilians to escape, according to Kremlin officials. However, Ukrainian leaders have greeted the plan with skepticism, after prior efforts fell through.

Steady bombardments on populated regions have caused a further crisis of diminishing food, water and medical supplies.
