NBCHS curling teams take gold, bronze at Battle West Districts

The North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) junior girls curling team are Battle West District champions.

The Vikings junior girls topped the hosts from Spirtwood this week in two straight games, to earn the gold in a best-of-three championship series at their bonspiel in Spiritwood.

Following a convincing 10-2 win in the opening game, Spiritwood pushed back in the second to lead 7-3 through the completion of the fifth end, before the NBCHS again stormed back with four-straight in the sixth and final end to steal the game and win the gold medal with an 8-7 victory.

Head coach with the Vikings curling teams, Evan Reid said he credits the team’s success to their dedication to the game and countless hours spent on the ice, practicing their craft.

“They’re a very experienced team despite how young they are,” Reid said. “They do a lot of curling even outside of what we do with school, as they joined one of the adult leagues [locally] and curl Wednesday nights, and then they also play in all the CurlSask events in the U15 age group, so they have a lot of experience and have thrown a lot of rocks.”

Featuring four Grade 9 students and one Grade 8, Reid said the team should continue to provide a strong future for the school’s curling program in the coming years, as they move on to the senior ranks next year.

The gold medal for the juniors comes just two weeks after the school’s senior mixed team took home a bronze medal in their District tournament, to end their season as well.

The NBCHS seniors defeated their cross-town rivals from John Paul II Collegiate in the B Semifinals, before falling to Leoville in the B Final for bronze in Wilkie, Feb. 15.
