Ethics investigation started following complaint

Feb 24, 2022 | 10:10 AM

Battleford town council approved a resolution this week for a Council Code of Conduct-Ethics investigation after a complaint was filed.

“It’s being investigated by the investigation team,” CAO Ash Alam said, adding that the complaint was filed Feb. 7.

Coun. Judy Pruden, chairing council’s meeting this week, related the investigation team formed will follow the Council Code of Conduct- Ethics Bylaw to look into this complaint.

There is currently no financial implication to the investigation, she said.

Council approved administration’s recommendation to acknowledge that a code of ethics complaint has been filed, and that an investigation process will begin according to the Council Code of Conduct-Ethics Bylaw.

No details of the reason for the complaint or which council member(s) it relates to were provided.

Similar to the town, the City of North Battleford started Council Code of Ethics investigations this year, one announced at the Jan. 5 special council meeting and the other at the Feb. 14 regular council meeting.

The city appointed Angela Kruk, of Regina law firm Gates & Company, as the third party investigator for both complaints.

The city did not provide any details of the complaints received.

Under both the city and town’s code of ethics bylaws, each member of council must uphold the following seven standards and values: honesty, objectivity, respect, transparency and accountability, confidentiality, leadership and the public interest, and responsibility.
