Paul was born in Fairholme, SK there is where he spent his childhood years on the family farm. As a young teenager Paul wanted to leave the farm and move to North Battleford where his older sister had built a house. While there in his school years, Paul excelled at sports. He was captain of North Battleford Notre Dame Hound Hockey Team, soccer team etc. from there, Paul entered the workforce helping older brothers and sisters with their farms and a short stint with CN. It was during that time, Paul got involved with construction which would become his calling card. Paul started framing houses at Maher Construction in early to mid 60’s and would return to work for Maher after returning from Toronto.
In the mid 60’s Paul moved to Toronto and found work at the GM plant; deciding the big city wasn’t for him Paul moved back to North Battleford. In the early 70’s Paul was married and fathered two boys. During their early childhood, Paul loved spending time on his acreage whether it being riding horses, fixing corrals, or just enjoying a coffee and a cigarette on the deck. The 80’s brought Paul from the acreage back to North Battleford where he continued building houses, additions and renovations.
After 30 plus year of “having his foot on the gas” Paul began to slow his work pace. He started to focus more renovations of commercial & residential properties for friends & family.
When Paul’s pace began to slow, he rediscovered his love of T.V. Paul endlessly enjoyed his T.V. shows from Gunsmoke, The Rifleman, All In The Family, Sandford & Son followed up by Matlock, the Blue Jays and of course the Boston Bruins.
In the last decade of his life Paul had mostly retired. He had remained working, healthy and active until some 5-6 years ago after a bout with pneumonia. Paul, always being a fighter and a competitor, tried his best to fend off time. Sadly, Paul moved on peacefully & quietly at the house his sisters built with his family and friends.
God Bless you Paul, we will see you again.
Left to cherish Paul’s memory is his sons: P. Michael Schmidt; grandson, Nathan Schmidt; Ryan Schmidt; siblings: Gus (Helga) Schmidt, Mary Mazurek, Betty Robertson, Minard Schmidt, John (Barbara) Schmidt, sisters-in-law: Shirley Schmidt, Sandy Schmidt, Susan Schmidt, Sally Schmidt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
