Project co-founder proposes Better Together signs at town entrances

The Better Together T-shirt Project co-founder would like to see entrances to the Battlefords have signs promoting the popular campaign.

Deb McNabb visited Battleford town council Tuesday evening with the proposal.

“I’m proud today that we are the home of Better Together,” she said.

McNabb said the project continues to grow in Canada and worldwide, connecting generations. The campaign started in 2019 as a mental health initiative, to connect seniors and youth, and encourage new friendships by getting them to look for others wearing shirt logos that matched their’s, as a bridge to start a conversation.

“The project has continued to ripple across our province and across Canada,” McNabb said.

Now, over 30,000 of the Better Together T-shirts are being worn on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

McNabb said she has heard many positive stories from the success of the project, to help develop deeper mutual understanding among people, decrease loneliness and improve feelings of well-being, for example.

She and her team are planning to launch a new website for the project on March 1.

“Even during a pandemic, Covid hasn’t stopped Better Together,” McNabb said.

She noted if council is supportive there would be no cost to the town to put up the Better Together signs as they would be provided by the group. McNabb hopes to have the Better Together logos on the signs, saying: “A Connected Community is a Healthy Community.”

Council was supportive of the idea of having small signs at the entrances to the town, showing that the Battlefords is the home of Better Together. Coun. Doug Laing liked the idea.

“I’m in favour of putting up some signs. I don’t think there’s much to consider. Thank you for your efforts,” he said.

Laing said he believes that everyone has been touched by the project somehow.

Coun. Judy Pruden, chairing the meeting in Mayor Ames Leslie’s absence, commended McNabb for doing a fantastic job with the Better Together campaign.

McNabb will come back to council at a future date with more details on the signage proposal.
