Feb 22, 2022 | 12:00 PM

The preliminary inquiry began Tuesday for a man facing a charge in the death of Cindy MacKay in 2020.

Michael MacKay, 39, is charged with first degree murder in the death of his wife Cindy MacKay of the Meota area.

The accused was arrested March 18, 2021. He was released after being granted bail in April of that year following a hearing at the Court of Queen’s Bench in Battleford.

The preliminary inquiry at North Battleford provincial court is scheduled to run until March 4, 2022. A publication ban is in effect on the details of the proceedings. During the inquiry the judge will determine if there is sufficient evidence for trial.

Judge Michelle Baldwin is presiding in the hearing with Oryn Holm as the Crown prosecutor and Nicholas Stooshinoff for the defence.

Cindy MacKay was transported to hospital in medical distress Feb. 7, 2020. She later died in hospital on Feb. 12, 2020.
