There were smiles all around the table at the recent Battleford town council meeting when Mayor Ames Leslie announced a family donated funds for two local recreation sites.

Battleford residents Neil and Rhonda Gosling committed $5,000 each to the Tot Lot and The Lions Walking Trail for a total $10,000 donation.

“This is not coming from any of the user groups. This is from them personally,” the mayor said. “We’re tremendously grateful. They are always very big supporters of our community, and always very involved in our community for many years. So I personally thank them very much.”

The Goslings sent a letter to the town, saying: “We are proud of our community and all it has to offer, so we are delighted to be able to assist in our small way.”

The gift from the family was provided to the town through The Battlefords and District Community Foundation.

Executive director Kathy McNinch said in the letter to the town that the Battlefords and District Community Foundation was established to provide individuals and businesses with, “the opportunity to have a permanent impact on their community.”

McNinch said the foundation has handed out over $1 million in grants and scholarships since 2007.

Council was thrilled to hear about the Goslings support.

“It’s fantastic news,” Coun. Doug Laing said.

Coun. Alexis Christensen recommended the town keep the Goslings abreast of developments on how exactly the funds will be used.

“They have let us know where the money should go,” she said. “It would be interesting to figure out a plan for it and let them know how those dollars were spent.”
