Benefit concert planned to help The Lighthouse

Jan 4, 2019 | 1:00 PM

Some local supporters have stepped up to help the Lighthouse Serving the Battlefords and are planning a benefit concert next month for the cause.

The All Lights Burning Bright event will take place at the Dekker Centre in North Battleford.

The event is being organized by Saskatchewan Celtic folk band Back of the Bus and the local Lighthouse organization.

“All the funds raised from admission will go to the Lighthouse,” band member Jim Walls said, noting attendees can also make an additional donation if they wish.

“We’re very hopeful that people will come and say: ‘This is a really good cause and here is a cheque for some more,’” he said.

Walls said the Lighthouse is always in need of funds so he hopes the money raised from the show will give it a boost.

Walls said a separate donor will cover the cost to rent the theatre for the event.

Back of the Bus will play a variety of Scottish, Irish and East Coast Celtic music for the show. Some young local musicians will also be performing for the opening act.

People attending will also hear a presentation from the Lighthouse representatives on the organization’s work in the community, supporting “the hungry, the homeless and the hurting.”

Walls noted it’s important to raise the visibility of this service and the work that The Lighthouse offers in the area, particularly over the winter, providing shelter and helping people in need.

“To have a warm and safe place to be and to live is an important thing,” he said. “We already know people are interested in the cause. We think it’s a great way to have some fun, to raise some money for (this) important work in the community, and to have a great evening out in the middle of winter.”

The event will take place Friday, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the fundraiser are $40, and can be purchased through the Dekker Centre box office.
