Chamber planning changing of the guard at annual banquet

The Battlefords Chamber of Commerce is looking forward to hosting the 113th Annual Chair’s Banquet later this month.

“It’s always an exciting time of the year in January,” said Chief Operating Officer Linda Machniak.

The event will be held Tuesday, Jan. 29, at a location still to be determined, starting at about 6 p.m. A number of local dignitaries will be in attendance.

The current first vice-chair Dallan Oberg is expected to take on the position of chair of the board for 2019, from the current chair Terry Caldwell. Oberg is a chartered professional accountant with Holm Raiche Oberg in North Battleford. The Chamber’s chair position title was formerly known as president before recently being changed to chair. The event will include a dinner and formal induction ceremony.

The guest speaker at this year’s event will be Keith Willoughby, dean and professor of management science at the Edwards School of Business in Saskatoon.

“He is a statistics guru,” Machniak said. “I understand Keith Willoughby, the guest, will bring a very enlightening presentation.”

People can purchase tickets for the chair’s banquet at the local Chamber office.

Director positions

The Chamber is also focusing on reducing the size of its board this year, a directive from one of its recent bylaws.

A number of new directors have been nominated for the six open positions that were available.

The aim is to downsize the board to 15 directors instead of 20.

Machniak said business is well connected these days, so there isn’t a need to have such a large board.

“The board has been reduced, but the committees and the numbers of people on the committees, and the members who can participate in that regard are being bolstered to help us with our work,” she said.

It is expected the director count will be reduced to about 18 individuals or less for 2019, with the long-term aim to bring the number down to 15 next year.

The board director elections will be discussed at the Chamber’s board meeting on Jan. 15.
