Battlefords AAA Sharks coming soon to the TV screen

Jan 2, 2019 | 3:25 PM

The Battlefords AAA Sharks are hosting a televised game Jan. 10 when the team welcomes the Saskatoon Stars to town for a showdown at Battleford Arena, with the matchup of the two teams to be featured on Max TV.

Saskatoon currently sits atop the league standings and the Battlefords in fourth. Vern Hiebert, co-manager of the Battlefords Sharks, said the Jan. 10 clash should provide a good outlet to showcase woman’s hockey in the region.

“What [people will] see is a really good quality hockey game of what girls in the 14 to 17-year-old age level will bring to the table and compete,” he said. “I think some people will be quite surprised at the level of hockey; it is definitely a very entertaining game and very fast with quite a bit of skill in there as well.”

Cameras for the broadcast won’t be the only special aspect of the night either, with the Battleford Sharks Atom team set to play a five minute intermission game and a large prize pot to be won with a guaranteed $500 – 50/50 draw.

Hiebert said just having an Atom girls’ team is a testament to the continued growth of women’s hockey in the Battlefords and area.

“There’s a lot of girls playing hockey, you look back even 10 years ago and it’s probably grown four or five times (in number of girls registering) maybe even more,” he said. “This year I think is the first year that Battleford Minor Hockey has an all-girls team in the Atom division, and that’s something that I think we’re going to continue to see grow, which certainly bodes well for girls’ minor hockey in the area.”

Tickets to the Sharks’ Jan. 10 matchup with the Saskatoon Stars can be purchased in advance at Discovery Leisure Co-op or at the door to the arena on game day.
