Local businesses optimistic for turning the corner on COVID-19

Battlefords businesses are feeling positive with the potential of more COVID-19 restrictions being lifted in the province soon.

Capitol Theatre North Battleford general manager Aleksi Anseth said it has been challenging for many people to navigate the current regulations. The theatre is waiting to see if there are some changes ahead.

“We’re just taking things one day at a time in regards to restrictions,” Anseth said.

Currently, the theatre requires proof of full vaccination or a recent negative COVID test result. At-home tests are not accepted.

The theatre will have a free movie night for people to take in on Valentine’s Day coming up this month, when A Star Is Born will be back on the screen at 8 p.m.

“I just hope we get to see some faces out here on the 14th, and everybody has a good time,” Anseth said.

The show is being sponsored by local business Bridges Chevrolet Buick GMC.

“We’re hoping the turnout is good because we would like to do more special events like this in the coming months,” Anseth said. “We’re hoping to do one around Easter as well.”

People are invited to make a donation to a local charity at the show. Funds will benefit the Battlefords Humane Society and the Boys and Girls Clubs of The Battlefords, now known as BGC Battlefords.

“Being able to give back and support the people, and the vulnerable in our community when this community has been so good to us, we love doing that,” Anseth said.

She-NANIGANS performance art venue owner Glennda Ilett said despite the the restrictions, the space is seeing a good turnout for shows.

“The response from the community is always positive,” she said.

Among the events coming up is the show Cupid’s Cabaret on Feb. 11 that includes some members from Battlefords Pride taking part.

While it has been a long, cold winter in the Battlefords, Ilett is excited about the future and moving into the new season ahead.

“It’s getting better all the time,” she said. “It started pretty slow when we reopened in September, but each event seems to be a little more well attended.”

She is looking forward to turning the corner on COVID, whenever the province is ready to reduce its restrictions in the future.

“As the restrictions lift, more people are going to be comfortable coming out into group situations,” Ilett said. “I’m looking forward to that as well.”
