City says plenty in budget for snow removal

Weighing in on the impact of the significant snowfall this season on the city’s budget, operations director Stewart Schafer says the City of North Battleford is well prepared for whatever the weather brings.

The city also had funds leftover from its snow removal budget that ended in December 2021 going into the new year.

So Schafer is confident the city will be able to stay within its budget for the current year.

“It’s just a standard year,” he said. “We expect that. We usually get two or three big storms and we go out and clean them. This year we have had one good one so far.”

Schafer added the snowfall event Monday evening wasn’t as significant as predicted, so city crews have already been out to catch up with the cleanup work.

The city’s 2022 budget for snow plowing and removal shows: $68,000 for roads snow plowing; $138,000 for roads snow removal; $113,000 for street sanding; and $39,200 for sidewalk clearing.

For the main thoroughfares, the top priority, the city clears the roads and removes the snow windrows, such as on 100, 101 and 102 Streets and 11 Avenue immediately after each event.

“When the snow gets too deep we will also go back and pick it up and move it because it becomes a road hazard,” Schafer said.

The city’s snow thrower and second snow removal grader that were on the fritz recently are now back up and running after being repaired Friday.

Schafer said while the latest cleanup costs are still being updated, the snow removal work has been moving along as needed, and he doesn’t anticipate any issues.
