Hometown Star Lamb recognized as community ambassador

Dec 10, 2018 | 4:00 PM

With 16 goals and 26 points through his first 32 games, North Stars’ forward Owen Lamb has already eclipsed his previous mark to set career highs in each statistical category and he still has just under half a season left to build on these totals.

But long before he was scoring goals for the black and silver, Lamb was a young fan attending North Stars’ games with family, hoping to one day fulfil the role his has now, as a contributing player on the team.

“I definitely came to lots of games when I was little, usually with my grandparents and my parents,” Lamb said. “We’d all come together, and I always looked up to the North Stars,” he continued, before adding with a bit of a laugh, “I was always too shy to talk to them, but now I’m one of them and I love it.”

That’s why, in addition to the offensive numbers, the 20-year-old North Battleford product has made it a point to live up to his status as a role model in the community, helping with different volunteering initiatives with the team, be it directly or indirectly involved with youth in the area.

Growing up in North Battleford and playing his junior hockey in the city has allowed Lamb to see the importance of community involvement by the players, an act that North Stars’ coach Brayden Klimosko believes likely had a lot to do with his community-based nature.

“I’m sure he remembers the days of when the Stars would be helping out with him as a kid growing up idolizing them, and now he’s the same,” Klimosko said. “It makes a lot of sense he was recognized and it’s well deserved.”

From cleaning up garbage in the park to reading to children at local schools, and playing street hockey with youth, no matter what the occasion, it seems there’s nothing the Stars do in the Battlefords that doesn’t include Lamb’s smiling face.

“At the end of the day, he’s just a community-based guy and he’ll do anything for the team,” Klimosko said. “You ask him to do something and he’ll be there.”

Lamb and his North Stars’ teammates will be back in action Tuesday night at the Civic Centre as the team welcomes the Nipawin Hawks to town.
