Innovation Credit Union changing CUplex name to InnovationPlex

Innovation Credit Union plans to change the name of the Credit Union CUplex to the InnovationPlex Recreation and Cultural Centre in the spring.

North Battleford’s Credit Union CUplex, which opened in 2013, is named after the credit union, which contributed $1.5 million in sponsorship for lifetime naming rights.

“Innovation has been so excited and honoured to be a partner with the city on this facility,” Innovation Credit Union’s chief executive officer Daniel Johnson said in his presentation during this week’s city council meeting.

The multi-purpose complex houses the Dekker Centre for the Performing Arts, the Battlefords CO-OP Aquatic Centre, the NationsWEST Field House and the Northland Power Curling Centre.

Johnson said Innovation is expecting to become a federally-regulated credit union this spring, so wanted to introduce its rebranding plans around the same time, and modernize its logo.

“We are looking to become one of Canada’s and Saskatchewan’s first federally-regulated credit unions,” he said. “That provided us an opportunity to review our logo and some of our naming arrangements that we have with different facilities.”

Regardless of whether the organization is approved for its federal charter to meet its anticipated spring timeline, it will still proceed with the rebranding and the new InnovationPlex name roll out.

“One doesn’t preclude the other,” Johnson said. “We can move forward with the name change without having to wait to get the official order from the federal government to become a federal credit union.”

Mayor David Gillan said the city appreciates being updated on all the credit union’s big plans ahead.

“Thank you very much for everything that Innovation Credit Union does in our community,” he said. “It’s a lot, and it’s appreciated. We know that you are very generous in our community.”
