The Battlefords North Stars have seen a pair of players recognized by the league this week for their proficiency over the last seven days, in the SJHL Players of the Week.

Blue liner, Tynan Ewart was named defenceman of the week, with a pair of goals and five points over the team’s three games, while forward Jake Southgate was named runner-up for MVP of the week with two goals and seven points in the three contests.

Defenceman of the week, Tynan Ewart

Ewart hit the ground running to open the new year, picking up three assists in the North Stars’ 5-4 shootout win over Estevan last Tuesday, following up the performance with goals in back-to-back games as well.

Scoring on a laser shot from the point versus Melville at home Friday in the team’s 4-3 victory over the visiting Millionaires, he then added another goal in the Stars 6-2 loss to Humboldt Saturday.

The week’s production only adds to the 19-year-old’s strong finish to December.

Riding a two-game point streak into the holidays to begin with, Ewart will now carry a five-game streak into the team’s home-and-home with Flin Flon this weekend, having scored two goals and seven points over the span.

In addition to being counted on as a defensive fixture on the team and regular on the penalty kill, Ewart’s offensive exploits have seen him continue to rise through the league’s defenceman scoring race. The 19-year-old currently sits fourth overall among blue liners in the SJHL this season, with 24 points in 36 games.

MVP of the week runner-up, Jake Southgate

Southgate opened the week with a monster performance against the second-place Bruins, scoring two goals and an assist, and adding a shootout goal as well.

The 19-year-old then followed up the performance with two primary assists against Melville, and another two primary helpers against the Broncos as well.

The team’s most consistent point producer from the beginning of the season, Southgate leads the North Stars with 16 goals (T-10th in SJHL) and 38 points (eighth in league) this season, while his 22 assists are also tied for a club-best.

Southgate finished runner-up for MVP of the week honours, to Melville’s Nicolas Samson who scored 10 points in four games for the Millionaires. To read the full Players of the Week breakdown, click here.

Southgate, Ewart and their North Stars’ teammates will return to action this weekend, for a home-and-home versus Kindersley Friday and Saturday. The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcasts will be available on 1050 CJNB.

The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7 p.m., both nights, with puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
