Oil Can Charlie’s opens new location in Battleford

Motorists needing automotive work have a new option to start the week, particularly for those on the south side of the river.

Oil Can Charlie’s Ltd. officially opened a second location in the Town of Battleford on Fifth Avenue West and Battleford Crossing, which is near the Co-op gas bar. Mayor Ames Leslie said it’s exciting to have the addition of a new business to start the new year and work with owner Jay Bottomley.

“I think he’s going to have great success over here,” Leslie said. “For anyone who’s hasn’t gone by yet, it complements the area really well. We’re excited to have a new business venture.”

Bottomley, whose partners with Keegan Sparrow and Sheldon Rafuse in BSR Ventures Ltd. on the project, said working with town administration has been smooth throughout the process. Construction began in late August for the facility, which was initially slated to potentially open by November, but was pushed to this month.

“It’s great to be a part of a new retail area, busy little area,” Bottomley said. “The town has been amazing to work with, they’re super happy to have us here and we’re super happy to be here.”

“We’re just excited to be open.”

The partner group is planning on creating a commercial retail or strip mall in the vicinity, construction of which would begin in 2023 or 2024. A site plan proposal was presented to council back in May.

The chief driver for the expansion is what Bottomley called a huge draw in the south of town. He noted the traffic count on Highway 4 South is higher than Highway 4 North, as people from communities like Red Pheasant Cree Nation, Poundmaker Cree Nation, Unity and more utilize the road. These drivers also are usually driving east to North Battleford, rather than the north side.

“If I can be the first point of entry or last place on the way home, then I’ll be laughing,” he said.

Bottomley added that the new location is a mirror image of their facility on the north side. Both will have a full staff.

“I wanted to make it the exact same inside so when an employee comes from the other store they can just step in and get right to it, be familiar with the set up.”
