North Stars hope to fetch win over Hounds

Nov 30, 2018 | 1:00 PM

After nearly a week since their last game, the Battlefords North Stars are back in action tonight, taking on the division-rival Notre Dame Hounds at the NB Civic Centre.

The North Stars enter action Friday in third place in the Global Ag. Risk Solutions Division, with a 6-3-2 record in November, and will be looking to close out the month with a strong showing in front of the hometown crowd.

The Hounds meanwhile, are 4-6-3 on the month, hoping to snap a two game losing skid, as the team from Wilcox, Sask., aims to climb their way back into the mix in their division, with the club currently sitting in fourth. The Hounds are four points back of the North Stars for third, with the Stars holding four games in hand.

Leading the way offensively for the Hounds up front is the dynamic one-two punch of Marshall Wilton and Nolan Renwick.

Wilton is coming off a two assist performance Wednesday night against the Klippers, and sits top 10 in league scoring, having tallied 34 points through his first 28 games this season. Renwick ranks within the top three in the rookie scoring race, with 22 points through 30 games, including eight with the extra man, good for second-best amongst freshmen in power play scoring.

In addition to their primary threats up front, Notre Dame relies heavily on their mobile defense core to rush the puck up ice and generate offensive contribution from the back end.

The Hounds have two defensemen with 20 points on the season, in Charles Martin and Tim Gould, each tied for fifth-best amongst defensemen. Martin’s seven goals also rank just one back of first for the blueliner goal crown.

The North Stars will enter action with an embarrassment of riches as far as depth of scoring is concerned, with eleven different players chipping in for goals over the team’s last five games, including four different defensemen getting in on the mix.

MacGregor Sinclair will lead the black and silver into action with 30 points in his first 27 games, along with Matthias Urbanski clicking at a similar clip with 29 points through 28 games.

Sinclair will be joined on the Stars’ top line tonight, once again by Ryan Gil and Quintin Loon-Stewardson. Quintin Loon-Stewardson lead the way for the Stars in their last matchup with the Hounds, potting a goal and picking up a scrap as well, as his team solidified a 3-2 win in a performance the Stars would like to replicate again tonight.

For the second straight game, Matthias Urbanski will remain on the Buziak-Lamb line in an effort to try and establish some further chemistry there. Lamb leads the team with 15 goals on the season, while Urbanski has put up 13 of his own.

Elijah Loon-Stewardson, with Brett Gammer and Regan Doig make up the third trio up front for the Stars, with both Gammer and Doig coming off a performance that saw each player notch a power play goal against the Klippers.

On line four, Kaden Boser, Tanner Robin and Dylan Esau bring additional speed and edge to the lineup with an abrasive outlook on the forecheck and dedicated approach to defending.

On the backend, Cody Spagrud and Tanner Scott will once again reunite to form the team’s go-to shutdown pairing. Spagrud’s offensive contribution has also been of note this season, with the defender ranking fifth in points among blue liners nearing the mid-way mark of the season, having put up 20 points through his first 28 games so far.

Matthew Fletcher will line up along with Noah Form on pair two, providing a stabilizing pair that despite not posting gaudy offensive totals, are truly one of the premier two-way defense pairings in the league, providing quick puck movement and an aptitude to make good reads, in addition to their stout defensive positioning.

Austin Shumanski and Ryan Graville round out the Stars’ blue line contingent this evening, with a penchant for physical play and penalty killing chops.

Between the pipes, goaltender, Joel Grzybowski returns to the crease this evening for his team’s lone game this weekend. Grzybowski has been a workhorse for the Stars this season, getting set for his twenty-third start of the season, amongst the most in the SJHL. Grzybowski has been especially solid as of late, having posted a combined .954sv% over his last two starts for his team.

Fans of the North Stars can catch all of the action tonight starting with the pregame show at 7:15 p.m. with puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m. on 1050 CJNB.
