SJHL Power Rankings see North Stars at fourth

Nov 28, 2018 | 4:00 PM

The Battlefords North Stars have won six of their last 10 games, while also picking up a single point in an additional two, for a 6-2-2 record over the span.

The Stars’ recent stretch of success has seen the club leapfrog over Kindersley for second spot in the division, thanks in part to a big win over the Klippers in the Stars most recent game, Nov. 24.

The North Stars feature within the top three on the penalty kill at 85.5 per cent, and have seen fantastic goaltending as of late, with starter, Joel Grzybowski having posted a combined .954 save percentage over his last two games, cementing his team with victories over the Weyburn Red Wings, and Kindersley Klippers respectively. Splitting Grzybowski’s appearances was a start by Chad Duran in between, that saw the former La Ronge Ice Wolves’ goalie from Littleton, CO., turn aside 23 of the 24 shots he faced in his North Stars debut against the defending champion, Hawks, posting an air-tight .958 save percentage in the shootout defeat.

The Stars have also shown a penchant for depth of scoring in recent games, having seen 11 different players chip in with at least a goal over their last five games.

#1 – Melfort Mustangs (20-6-1)

The Melfort Mustangs are the hottest team on ice in the SJHL as of late, having won 10-straight games.

No doubt the key to the Mustangs’ success as of late has been their ability to lock it down on defence, having allowed a combined 12 goals over their last 10 games, holding their opposition to just a single goal in eight of those games.

Offensively, the Mustangs have also turned it on as of late, with forward Justin Ball recently taking over the league scoring lead, in both goals, with 26, and points, with 46 through his first 27 games. Carson Albrecht is not far behind Ball with 42 points, good for third in the scoring race.

#2 – Humboldt Broncos (19-7-2-1)

The Humboldt Broncos are 7-2-1 over their last 10 games, dominating much of November to climb out atop their division with 41 points through their first 29 games.

Drew Warkentine, who was recently named SJHL Player of the Week, has scored seven goals through his first five games since returning to the Broncos, the team he started his junior career with four seasons ago, before stints with four teams in four different leagues before returning to the green and yellow.

Warkentine adds another offensive zone threat to the top team in the Global Ag. Risk Solutions Division, giving the club an additional offensive dimension to go with forward Michael Clarke, who leads the team with 37 points, good for sixth in league scoring.

#3 – Nipawin Hawks (19-8-0-1)

The defending-champion, Nipawin Hawks, have won four-straight contests, and boast the best defensive game in the league, having only allowed 54 goals against through their first 28 games played, while also encompassing the top penalty kill percentage, clicking along at 87.4 per cent.

Hawks’ goaltender, Declan Hobbs, who was recently named Sasktel SJHL Goaltender of the Week, ranks at the top or among the elite in every meaningful goaltending stat, including ranking first in Goals Against Average (1.81), Save Percentage (.942), and sitting second in wins (12).

#5 – Flin Flon Bombers (15-8-0-2)

The Flin Flon Bombers are coming off two-straight losses, but have still come out victorious in six of their last 10, possessing the number one ranked offence in the league, thanks largely to their two top scorers, in Brandson Hein and Nate Hooper, each featured within the top five league-wide in points.

Hein remains the only top scoring forward to average a goal-per-game, with 25 through his first 25 games. The second head of the Bombers’ two-headed scoring beast, Hooper, ranks second in assists, with 28 through his first 25 games played. The high-end scoring punch up front is also solidified with great depth as well, that have helped the Bombers to the second-best power play conversion percentage, hammering home a goal on 25 per cent of their chances.

The Battlefords North Stars are back in action, hoping to continue their stellar play as of late, as the team welcomes the division-rival Notre Dame Hounds to the Civic Centre Friday.
