New sentencing hearing scheduled for Mirasty in manslaughter case

The man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the Sequin Mooswa homicide investigation will have a new full sentencing hearing after the Crown and Defence failed to come to an agreement about the facts in the case.

In October, 2020, Keenan Mirasty, 22, of North Battleford entered his plea to unlawfully cause the death of Sequin Mooswa on March 8, 2020 and thereby commit manslaughter.

The sentencing hearing for Mirasty, who remains in custody, was held on Aug. 11, 2021. A decision in the case was initially scheduled for Sept. 10. However, Judge Daniel O’Hanlon said he could not proceed with sentencing at this time because Crown prosecutor Scott Bartlett and Defence lawyer Michael Nolin had different interpretations of the statement of facts originally presented.

During Friday’s session set for case management, the details of which were on public record in this instance, the court heard that the two parties had not come to an agreement about changing the submitted statement of facts or for a resolution related to the case.

Crown prosecutor Brittany Goodman is now taking over case management of the file for the Crown. When she appeared in court by phone, Goodman said the Crown would need to call evidence in the case, and anticipated two days would be needed for a hearing, as it is expected eight witnesses would be called.

As a result, a new full sentencing hearing has now been scheduled for May 25 and 26, 2022 at Courtroom No. 2 in North Battleford provincial court.

RCMP previously reported Sequin Mooswa, 22, was found deceased in a home on St. Laurent Drive in North Battleford on March 8, 2020.
