Late Night Shopping coming back to Turtleford

Dec 1, 2021 | 11:30 AM

A Christmas shopping staple in the Town of Turtleford is coming back next week.

Late Night Shopping, a community event put on by the town to increase consumer traffic in the downtown area, is set for Dec. 9 with stores staying open until 8:00 p.m.

Chris Gregson, Marketing manager with Turtleford & District Co-op, said it will be a needed change for residents.

“It’s nice for people to come together and enjoy Christmas,” he said. “With COVID, we’ve been pretty careful with what we do, which we still will be, but it’s nice.”

Stores on the street will have a variety of deals and discounts, while there will be hot dogs and entertainment as well, including a certain bearded man making an appearance. Residents can also nominate which business had the best Christmas decorations. While pandemic restrictions are still in place, this stands in contrast with the atmosphere of 2020.

“Some of the stores around town had sales on last year, but this year there will be a Santa, hot dogs, and more,” Gregson said.

Santa is scheduled to appear between 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. on December 9.

Given that large gatherings have been infrequent in almost every community in Saskatchewan, there’s a hope that festivities like this might provide both an emotional boost to the neighbourhood and a financial one to businesses.

“This sort of event can attract customers from the surrounding area that may not always come for groceries,” Gregson said.

Lawrence Weinrauch, Mayor of Turtleford, said there’s more eagerness amongst residents to participate in the Christmas season after being isolated for much of the past two years.

“People are a little more excited to actually do something now,” he said.

And that’s extending to the following weeks of the month. Weinrauch said they’re making a concerted effort to help people embrace the Christmas season in the ways people still can.

“We’re encouraging everyone to decorate their houses with lights this year,” he said.

The town is planning on announcing other activities for residents in the near future. More information on Late Night Shopping, as well ballots for nominating the best decorated business, can be found at town hall and online. Deadline for handing in nominations is noon on Dec. 21.
