Another person to stand trial in connection to homicide of Tiki Laverdiere

Samuel Takakenew will stand trial at Court of Queen’s Bench in Battleford in connection to the homicide of Tiki Laverdiere.

A date for the trial has yet to be set for the 37-year-old who is charged with accessory after the fact to murder.

Takakenew’s next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 10 to be spoken to.

Laverdiere, 25, was reported missing on May 12, 2019. She was last seen in North Battleford May 1, 2019. Her remains were found in a rural area outside North Battleford July 11, 2019.

Five others accused in the case are still facing charges. Jesse Sangster, Danita Thomas, Shayla Orthner, Soaring Eagle Whitstone and Nicole Cook are charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle. They are all scheduled for trials in 2022 and 2023, also at Court of Queen’s Bench in Battleford.

Four other individuals have previously been sentenced. Nikita Cook, of Onion Lake Cree Nation, was sentenced in October to life in prison after being found guilty of first-degree murder. Charles St. Savard was sentenced in January to two years less a day in custody after pleading guilty to kidnapping Laverdiere. Brent Checkosis was sentenced in May 2020 to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to a charge of accessory after the fact to murder. Mavis Takakenew was sentenced to 18 months incarceration in May 2020 after previously pleading guilty to the same charge.
