North Stars fall in shootout to Hawks

Nov 23, 2018 | 10:36 PM

The Battlefords North Stars fell 2-1 in a shootout Friday night to the defending-champion, Nipawin Hawks.

At the end of a scoreless first period, it was the North Stars who led on the shot clock by a 7-6 margin.

Although there was no scoring to report, the first period certainly saw its fair share of action, with the two sides coming out bound and determined to impose their will physically and play a fast-paced but pushing brand of game.

The feisty intensity would come to a head late in the first period, when Stars’ forward Braydon Buziak took exception to a Jordan Simoneau hit on Cody Spagrud at center, that caused the pair to square off in a slugfest that saw each player escorted to their respective locker rooms early, not to return to action for the night, slapped with a 5-minute major and 10-minute game misconduct apiece, as per the standard for such altercations.

Come the second period, it was the Hawks who would draw first blood, courtesy of Brodie Girod. Girod would score his third of the season, after picking up the puck and carrying it into the Stars’ zone, driving wide on the defenseman to shield the frozen rubber disk from his clasp. Cutting back in front of the goal at the last instant, the slight forward then managed to tuck the puck home on the far side of the net; 1-0 Hawks.

Girod’s goal would prove to be the only goal to make the board through the first 40 minutes, with the top ranked defense in the league, the Nipawin Hawks, carrying their one goal lead right to the final minute-and-a-half of regulation time. That’s when the Battlefords would finally break through, thanks to the deft touch of The Wisconsin Wonder, Austin Becker.

With time dwindling down in the third, and the North Stars having thrown everything but the kitchen sink at the opposition goal, Brett Gammer threaded the puck to Dylan Esau in front, who then relayed it on further to Becker at the side of the net, flipping the puck over the sprawling netminder and into the twine to establish a breakthrough on the offensive end and knot the game up, 1-1 with just 1:36 left on the clock.

The game was destined for overtime.

By the end of regulation, it was the North Stars leading the shot clock by a 31-22 advantage, with the goaltenders on each side having come up large when called upon with game saving stops.

After 3-on-3 overtime solved nothing, it was off to the shootout for already the second time in three games within the season-series showdown.

After Eric Sorensen scored on Nipawin’s second shot, the Hawks goaltender, Hobbs, would make his third-straight stop in the penalty-shot relay to solidify the victory for his team.

2-1 Hawks, the final.

North Stars goaltender, Chad Duran made 23 saves on the 24 shots he faced in  his Stars’ debut to solidify the back end for his team and post a glowing .958sv% in his opening appearance with the club.

The North Stars will now look to regroup quickly, as the team is back in action Saturday night at home against the division-rival Kindersley Klippers. Fans can catch all the action at the NB Civic Centre and on 1050 CJNB, starting with the pregame show at 7:15 p.m. and puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
