Unity resident wins BUHF $100,000 Cash Lottery

Nov 12, 2021 | 2:45 PM

A couple from Unity were the big winners of the Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation $100,000 Cash Lottery.

Sandy Richards received the call from BUHF Friday morning, telling her that she and her husband Darryl were the recipients of the grand prize of the 27th annual lottery. She said they were both shocked and excited when they heard the news.

“It’s a wonderful day,” she said. “I phoned my kids and grandkids and those calls went pretty good!”

A long-time supporter of BUHF and participant in the Cash Lottery, Richards said it’s been important for her and her husband to support the foundation for many years, given that Unity residents frequent the hospital from time to time.

“Everybody needs health care,” she said. “We’ve both utilized the hospital over the years.”

At this point, Richards said she and her husband haven’t made a decision on what they will do with the winnings. However, they have a couple ideas.

“We’ll probably put some of it away and then next summer maybe do some renovations,” she said.

Shauna McGifford, Fund Developer with BUHF, said it’s always a fun day to announce the winners.

“Some are new purchasers, some have purchased for years, some are former employees within Sask. health region,” she said. “It’s fantastic to see where the support comes from and it’s fun to tell people they’ve won.”

Winners of the $1,000 prizes came from all over.

“We do receive fantastic support from Unity, so we’re excited to give it to the Richards.”

McGifford added that they won’t know the total of what our sales are for a while, as there’s tallying left to take place. In terms of what to expect, she said they’re confident that they did well.

“Based on the number of tickets and percentage of them that we sold,” she said. “Also knowing that our 50/50 went for 53,860.”

“So yeah, we’re happy with that.”

Pearl Munro of North Battleford was the 50/50 winner.
