Multicultural Week kicks off with Mexican food night

North Battleford will be celebrating Multicultural Week with a taste of Mexico.

As part of the Cultural Cooking Connections program, people who have signed up will learn the art of preparing a Mexican meal, and also sit down to enjoy their scrumptious creations. The event which is planned for the Don Ross Centre tonight is already sold out.

The Cultural Cooking Connections program, which continues into the spring, will feature a series of fun and educational cooking classes to teach people how to prepare meals from around the world.

The Taste of Mexico night is provided through a partnership between Midwest Food Resources, the Battlefords Immigration Resource Centre and the City of North Battleford.

Midwest Food Resources is a non-profit organization that promotes healthy eating, helps newcomers learn about Canadian food products and provides information on food safety. Board member Claude Desnoyers said he is pleased to see such a positive response from the community for the event.

“Part of our programming involves teaching people how to prepare food,” he said. “This is one of the classes being offered.”

Desnoyers said people participating in the Mexican cuisine cooking class will also discuss what other places around the world they would like to see featured in future cooking classes.

Desnoyers added Midwest Food Resources, located in North Battleford, also runs the local Fresh Food Box program in the community. People who sign up will receive a variety of healthy foods, including fresh fruits and vegetables, at an at-cost rate, on a regular basis throughout the year. The aim of the program is to enable more people to have access to nutritious foods for their families at a reasonable cost.
