Moosomin First Nation has elected a new chief.

Cheryl Kahpeaysewat took the lead in last week’s election with 338 votes, surpassing incumbent Bradley Swiftwolfe who garnered 298 votes.

Swiftwolfe, who served as chief since elected to the position in 2013, commended the incoming chief on her success on his Facebook page.

“Congratulations to our newly elected Chief Cheryl Kahpeaysewat,” he wrote. “I will support her. I will encourage her and most importantly believe in her. I also want to congratulate our re-elected council and our three new [councillors]. Special thanks to our outgoing council for all their years of service… Our Nation is in a great place and time. We all have much to look forward to together.”

Newly elected chief Kahpeaysewat has a prior background in education and once taught at Moosomin School and Mosquito School.

Kahpeaysewat said on her Facebook Page following her win that she is grateful to everyone for standing behind her.

“I would like to thank you all for your incredible support on our success. We begin this journey together. As I walk through the doors of office, I will walk with you in my heart,” she wrote.

Chief Kahpeaysewat also sent a message to the community on her Facebook Live video.

Elected for the eight councillor positions are: incumbents Harry Moosomin, Will Blind, Lance Myo, Fabian Swiftwolfe, and Preston Weenie, along with new councillors Jamie Mooswa, Gage Bird and Iver Swiftwolfe.

The swearing-in ceremony for the new chief and council is expected to be later this month.
