North Stars fall just short against Bombers

Nov 17, 2018 | 11:07 PM

The Battlefords North Stars fell 5-4 to the Flin Flon Bombers Saturday night in a battle that went right down to the wire for the second straight night.

Dawson MacKenzie opened the scoring just after the mid-way mark of the first, cashing in his fifth of the season to put the Bombers ahead 1-0.

With just under five minutes to go in the first, Flin Flon defenseman Isaac Jackson made it 2-0, scoring just 15 seconds into the Bombers’ first power play opportunity of the night.

With feverish tape-to-tape passing along the perimeter, the puck went to Nate Hooper, who then passed to Brandson Hein, who in turn fed to Jackson, who, after strolling his way across the blue line, fired a shot through traffic and into the net.

Jackson’s goal proved to be just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the damage the Bombers would muster while on the man-advantage.

Despite outshooting the Bombers 10-7 in the first, the North Stars trailed 2-0 by the conclusion of the period.

To open the second frame of action, Vincent Nardone scored the maroon and white their second power-play strike of the night, notching his 12th of the season within the first two minutes of play.

The Stars would, however, respond to the 3-0 goal in short order with a marker of their own, coming under a minute later, courtesy of a brilliant passing play capped off by Brett Gammer.

Braydon Buziak hauling the puck into the attacking zone started the scoring play by handing off the frozen disk to Gammer. The Edmonton Alberta product, Gammer, then parlayed his feed further to Austin Becker busting alongside him to the opposition net. Almost as if slowing down time upon receiving the puck on his tape, Becker then made a return feed to Gammer at the side of the Flin Flon goalmouth, that the forward then lasered past an awe-struck goaltender.

The Bombers’ response of their own came just before the midway mark of the period thanks to, once again, a power play goal. This time it was Hein cranking home his league-leading 24th goal of the campaign.

The North Stars, bent but not broken down 4-1, would then give their fans a real opportunity to cheer, etching back-to-back marks in the scorecard for the home side, coming off the stick blade of, first, Noah Form, followed then by Matthias Urbanski.

Form’s goal gave the defenseman his first of the season, and first of his SJHL career. Urbanski’s goal, meanwhile, tied the forward for tops on the team, with now 13 on the season.

At 4-3 heading into the third period, and a 25-12 shot advantage held by the Stars, it was once again the Bombers breaking the ice early in the period, this time on a Chrystopher Collin goal just 41 seconds in.

Rather than be deflated, the back and silver put their work boots right back on and scored a late goal of their own. This time the scoring play resulted thanks to a Quintin Loon-Stewardson shot, depositing what had been a Ryan Gil bid initially, that had ricocheted off the glance after stinging wide, only to bounce back out in front for Loon-Stewardson to knock home.

Despite the resilient effort shown to get the team once again back to within one, the Stars would run out of time on their comeback bid, with the Bombers holding on for the 5-4 win.

The North Stars are back in action Sunday night for their final game of the weekend, as the team welcomes the Weyburn Red Wings to town. You can catch the action at the Civic Centre and on 93.3 The Rock, starting with pregame at 7:15 p.m. and puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
