St. Walburg School to host senior boys volleyball provincials

The town of St. Walburg will be the centre of high school volleyball later this month, as the community’s school will host senior boys 2A volleyball provincials, Nov. 26–27.

Originally scheduled to host last season, due to the cancelation of high school sports because of the pandemic, the school’s hosting duties were bumped to this year. It is something that has only added to the anticipation surrounding the event, now fast-approaching.

Principal of the school, Kate Renwick said hosting the provincial tournament is an opportunity the school and community are very much looking forward to as a smaller centre.

“It’s really exciting,” Renwick said. “We’re really looking forward to being able to host a prestigious event like this, and I know our boys are excited to get the chance to participate, and our students to be able to host teams and communities from around the province. There’s a lot of buzz and excitement among the staff and the students.”

With the return of high school athletics this fall, Renwick said they have had a few home tournaments throughout the first half of the season, though nothing to the magnitude of what provincials will hold later this month.

Ten teams will attend from throughout the province, which will be determined over the next couple of weeks as teams across Saskatchewan compete in conferences and then regionals with a chance to punch their ticket to the provincial showdown. By Nov. 21, the participating teams will be determined.

The St. Walburg senior volleyball team is made up of a range of Grades 10, 11 and 12 boys.

The team is having a strong season heading into provincial hosting duties, coming off a bronze medal finish last weekend at North Battleford Comprehensive High School, with a gold medal under their belt as well at the Mega Volley tournament earlier this fall in Maidstone.
