One of accused sentenced after pleading guilty in Moosomin case

One of the individuals facing charges related to the death of Damian Moosomin last year was sentenced to serve time in prison after pleading guilty.

Denver Roy, 36, of Sweetgrass First Nation pleaded guilty to the charge of offering an indignity to a dead body in North Battleford provincial court on Oct. 29.

He was sentenced to 10 months custody and nine months probation.

An additional charge of accessory after the fact was withdrawn.

There is a publication ban on the details of the case until after all the accused individuals have gone through the court process.

Five others are also facing charges.

Melissa Semaganis of Poundmaker Cree Nation is charged with accessory after the fact to murder. She was previously released following a bail hearing at Queen’s Bench Court on June 14. Her case will return to North Battleford court Nov. 17 at 11:30 a.m. via CCTV.

Stormy Wapass-Semaganis of Edmonton is facing a charge of first-degree murder and will return to court Nov. 26 at 10 a.m. She previously applied for bail at a hearing at Queen’s Bench Court, but the court indicated there was a publication ban on the June 17, 2021 decision.

Tye Partridge of Moosomin First Nation has been charged with first degree murder. He is set to have a preliminary hearing tentatively scheduled from May 16 to 20, 2022 in North Battleford provincial court. During the preliminary inquiry the judge will determine if there is sufficient evidence for trial.

Jannay Blackbird of Saulteaux First Nation is facing a charge of first-degree murder and is scheduled to return to court Jan. 11, 2022, at 8:30 a.m. to be spoken to.

Also among the accused individuals is a male who was under the age of 18 at the time of the alleged offence. He is charged with accessory after the fact and cannot be identified in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Damian Moosomin, 20, was found deceased in the backyard of a property in the 1500 block of 105th Street in North Battleford on May 16, 2020. He was originally reported missing to police May 11 of that year.

The allegations against the accused individuals have not been proven in court.
