North Battleford Legion branch planning Poppy Day as part of National Poppy Campaign to support veterans

The local Legion branches in the Battlefords are starting to get ready for Remembrance Day coming up Nov. 11.

The Royal Canadian Legion’s 2021 National Poppy Campaign begins at the end of October. All funds raised from the Poppy Campaign across Canada support veterans and their families. The national campaign officially starts on Friday, Oct. 29. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the poppy symbol.

Poppy Day

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #70 in North Battleford will have a Poppy Day event on Saturday, Oct. 30. Volunteers will give poppies for donations at several businesses in the city throughout the day. There will also be a table set up at the Discovery Co-op Mall located off Territorial Drive.

“We do not have the assistance of our army cadets or air cadets because of COVID, so we will have Legion members at the different areas that they have been in the past,” president Marilyn Clark said. “We ask the public to please support us.”

Poppies will also be available throughout the city and at the Legion branch leading up to Remembrance Day.

People can also visit the Legion branch to purchase a wreath in memory of a veteran.

For Royal Canadian Legion Branch #9 in Battleford, poppies will also be available throughout the community starting around the end of October.

The Battleford Legion branch is again planning its annual Poppy Tea at the branch location on Nov. 6 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

President Esther Delainey said the tea event is an opportunity for people who want to come out and remember the veterans who served.

She said family members or friends who want to buy wreaths for their loved ones can also do so at the same time.

Remembrance Day ceremonies in Battlefords

In North Battleford, the local Legion will have a flag-raising ceremony outside city hall on Nov. 5.

For Remembrance Day on Nov. 11, Legion Branch #70 plans to have a virtual event similar to last year.

The ceremony will be live-streamed for the public to view due to the ongoing pandemic.

Clark said the Legion is currently finalizing the process. She said last year less than 30 people participated in the ceremony in person in the Legion Hall.

“It’s a lot safer. You can’t go to John Paul II Collegiate as we have done in the past and have 200 to 300 people there, because you just can’t check everybody,” Clark said.

Only veterans will be permitted to attend the small ceremony in the Legion Hall where the event will be held. The public will not be allowed to attend.

Following the event, the Legion will lay wreaths at the cenotaph in North Battleford.

“If you see a veteran or you know a veteran in a nursing home, please take the time to thank them,” Clark said. “Think of the young men and women that are still serving overseas. Again, never forget. They fought for our freedom.”

For Royal Canadian Legion Branch #9 in Battleford, organizers are planning a small ceremony for members only on Remembrance Day at the Legion Hall.

A limited number of people will be permitted to attend.

After the ceremony, the Legion will place wreaths at the cenotaph in Battleford.

The event will be videotaped and uploaded to the Legion Branch #9 Facebook Page within a couple of days after Remembrance Day.

Previously, before the pandemic, the Legion would normally have held its Remembrance Day ceremony at St. Vital School in Battleford. But that was not possible in 2020 or this year.

“Last year we had it at the [Legion] hall, the same as this year. I won’t say it’s because of COVID restrictions, but we just want to keep everybody safe,” said Delainey. “We don’t want to have any big crowds.”
