Stars aim to sniff out win against Hounds

Nov 4, 2018 | 1:00 PM

Coming off a thrilling 3-2 win over the Red Wings in Weyburn, the Battlefords North Stars will look to close out their weekend on a continued positive note, as they head right back to the grind this afternoon for their third game in as many days.

The matchup at the summit of the Stars’ weekend road trip will pit the Battlefords up against a division rival in the Notre Dame Hounds.

MacGregor Sinclair, who returned to action for the North Stars last game after missing Friday night’s tilt, appeared to not miss a beat, generating several scoring chances along with his linemates, Ryan Gil and Matthias Urbanski.

That top line also had the opportunity to flex their defensive chops, matching up the majority of the night against the top line of the Red Wings, holding the opposition’s best scoreless at even strength.

The second line, featuring Owen Lamb, Elijah Loon-Stewardson and Braydon Buziak are the conglomerate that combined for the game winner last night, with Buziak potting his team the final goal to cement victory with just under five minutes left in the third period.

On unit three, the mixture of Austin Becker, Brett Gammer and Regan Doig may have been the most impressive line for the Stars in Weyburn, going out and largely dominating their counterparts on the home side.

With electric quickness on a dogged cycle game, the Battlefords’ trio had the Red Wings’ defenders collectively reaching for an aspirin on the bench, due to all the headaches the Stars’ combination provided them.

The fourth line will hope to continue to showcase their scoring capabilities, with Quintin Loon-Stewardson having now notched goals in two-straight heading into today. He will be joined by Tanner Robin, whose two primary assists last night provided an integral contribution to the team’s victory, and Dylan Esau who draws back into the fold, providing additional speed and abrasiveness in board battles down low.

On the blue line, defenseman Noah Form will be reunited with Stars’ captain Cody Spagrud on the club’s top pair. The duo provides the North Stars’ staff with their go-to shutdown unit against the other team’s top line, when they can get their desired matchup on the road.

Matthew Fletcher and Seth Summers remain glued on the second pairing again tonight, bringing another good mix of all-around intangibles and offensive intuition.

Tower of strength, Austin Shumanski, will return today to cement the team’s third pair, across from right-hander, Ryan Granville, who stepped up his physical presence with the hit of the game last night against the Wings.

In goal, Joel Grzybowski will make his third straight start of the weekend, looking to help improve his organization’s record to 2-1 on the road swing.

Fans of the North Stars can tune into 1050 CJNB for all the action, starting with the pregame show at 4:15 p.m. and puck drop at 4:30 p.m.
