Bruins take bite out of North Stars

Nov 2, 2018 | 11:24 PM

The Battlefords North Stars felt the quick-strike capabilities of a motivated Bruin Friday night, falling 6-4 to Estevan in a wild contest.

The first period brought with it a bit of a rough start for the North Stars, with the team finding themselves behind 3-0 early.

Will Koop got the scoring started just over two minutes in, potting his second of the season courtesy of a nice passing play from Turner Ripplinger and Bryce Platt. The goal gave the building life, and the reciprocating energy the crowd feed the home-side only seemed to increase the bears’ hunger for more.

Almost exactly two minutes later, Estevan struck again, with the red-hot, TJ Irey, coming off a two-goal performance in his previous game, putting some further magic on display for the hometown crowd on a snipe to the top shelf.

Unfortunately for the North Stars, and fortunately for the Bruins, the early goal parade would not be finished there.

Only a minute after their insurance marker, Estevan would add one more yet, to make it 3-0

Eventually, the Stars’ hard work and resiliency paid off, thanks to Quintin Loon-Stewardson’s tally to make it 3-1. The goal marked the first of the season for the younger Loon-Stewardson, and first overall of his SJHL career, sparking perhaps an even further boost to his teammates.

With Loon-Stewardson’s goal coming already late in the period, the North Stars would flex their own penchant for scoring in bunches when Owen Lamb struck with his first of what would be two goals on the night.

Just like that, with just under three seconds to go in the second, it was suddenly a one-goal game with still a period to go.

With the North Stars’ momentum seemingly unimpeded by the intermission, Lamb’s second goal of the game came just under a minute into the third, thanks to a seeing-eye shot from Matthew Fletcher from the corner that, with a sprinkle of serendipity, happened to find its way off of Lamb and passed the goaltender.

Not a full 50 seconds into the third and it was a 3-3 game.

Logan Spence then all but completed the comeback, scoring to make it 4-3 Stars, stunning those in attendance at Affinity Place.

However, the celebration was relatively short-lived thanks to a wild finish that saw the Bruins score two bang-bang goals from Koop and Manz respectively, in just over a minute’s time. This would reverse the lead once again, seemingly this time, in the blink of an eye.

Desperate for the tying goal once again, the North Stars pressed late with the goalie pulled, ultimately leading to some icing on the cake by McChesney, firing his tenth of the year into the empty net.

The North Stars will aim to rebound quickly as the team is back in action Saturday night, taking on the Red Wings in Weyburn. Coverage begins on the broadcast at 7:15 p.m. on 1050 CJNB.
