Barbecue fundraiser a success

Battlefords Humane Society ‘Shelter Us’ campaign launch raises over $21,000

Sep 20, 2021 | 2:03 PM

The Battlefords Humane Society is thrilled after its “Shelter Us” capital campaign launch Saturday raised $21,602 in one day.

The campaign was started to raise funds to build a new replacement shelter that is badly needed.

Shelter co-ordinator Michelle Spark thanked everyone who stopped by the barbecue fundraiser and made a donation.

“I feel pretty good,” she said. “It all came in from one day. A big chunk of that was from Battleford Furniture. They purchased the community cat room, at the foundation level. That was $20,000.”

The rest of the donations came in throughout the day for the remaining $1,602 raised.

During the event a number of guests visited to show their support, including representatives from Animal Protection Services of Saskatchewan, who discussed the importance of the Humane Society to the community. They also spoke about the benefits of the shelter’s safe haven program that helps families in crisis needing interim care for their pets.

Some visitors also adopted a few pets during the afternoon.

“It was a great day just to bring awareness as to who we are and what we do in the community,” Spark said.

She added it was also a good opportunity for the organization to get the word out about its plans for the new shelter, and some of the programs the organization hopes to put in place.

Last year, the Battlefords Humane Society received a $100,000 donation from the Bill and Betty Heno Fund to help support the purchase of land for the new Humane Society building, which will be located on Highway 4 North in the RM of North Battleford.

The total project cost is estimated at about $2 million. A total of $500,000 had previously been received. The Humane Society hopes to start construction on the new facility in the spring of 2022.

Spark said the Humane Society is encouraging people to give to the “Shelter Us” campaign at any time, whether in person or online, to help support the project.

Another fundraiser is planned for October, with a Halloween theme, with more details to follow.
