North Stars bucked by Broncos in O.T.

Oct 27, 2018 | 11:14 PM

Despite no goals in the opening period, Saturday night’s showdown between the Battlefords North Stars and Humboldt Broncos was as intense and fast-paced as advertised.

With countless scoring chances turned aside, and golden opportunities deemed not to be from right in on goal – including breakaway chances by both Braydon Buziak and Regan Doig – the goaltenders for each respective side established early this was going to be a netminder’s battle of attrition – a dual to see who cracks first.

The first period saw a bit of nastiness, as Matthias Urbanski was the unwitting recipient of a heavy collision from behind, thanks to an aggressive shove from Broncos’ defenseman Kade Olsen, earning the defender a 10-minute misconduct and additional 2-minute minor penalty to be served by a teammate. Getting up a bit slowly, but ultimately unfazed, Urbanski stayed in the game and eventually, in the second period, exacted revenge, accruing his own 10-minute misconduct and additional 2-minute minor for giving a hit from behind right back to a Broncos’ player.

After a scoreless first period that saw a 13-10 shot count in favour of the visitors, it was Humboldt who struck first in the second.

The goal came courtesy of Michael Clarke, the team’s leading scorer in the lineup. Busting in on a 2-on-1 rush chance, Clarke, looking off the passing option would instead opt to fire the puck high to the short side to break the goose egg and make it 1-0 Broncos. Defenseman Josh Patrician picked up the lone assist on the play.

Coming out for the third period determined to nix the zero on their side of the board, the North Stars initiated a full-court press, leading to Braydon Buziak’s fourth goal of the year. Jamming the puck home from the side of the crease, Buziak’s tally would only energize his line further it seemed, as they refused to stop there.

Later in the period, Buziak again etched his name in the scorecard, this time as the set-up man. Buziak, receiving a relay feed from Elijah Loon-Stewardson along the side boards, then proceeded to parlay his line’s offensive zone pressure into a scoring opportunity sending a centring feed to the third member of the trio, Owen Lamb in front.

Lamb made good on the offering. Thanks to a nice two-stack set up from Buziak and Loon-Stewardson, Lamb capitalized on what marked his eighth goal of the season, just one off his career high. Perhaps even more importantly, the goal gave the North Stars their first lead of the game at a critical point, more than half-way through the third period.

Unfortunately for the hometown side, it would only take a minute for the Broncos to answer back, thanks to a quick release from the mid-slot, beating the Stars’ goalie over the glove hand.

In the extra frame, despite a nice chance or two by the Stars’, it was 20-year-old Derek Patter who ended the night, sending his club home happy and leaving the North Stars and their fans shocked and stunned on home ice, thanks to a gorgeous move inside-out on the defender before snapping a shot far side off the post and in to seal the win 3-2.

By the end of the night, both goaltenders had seen their share of rubber, with the Bronco’s Rayce Ramsay making 45 saves on the 47 shots he faced, while the North Stars’ Joel Grzybowski shrugged aside 40 of the 43 sent his way.

The North Stars will now get a few days to rest and regroup before getting back into action Oct. 30 against La Ronge.
