No injuries in evening house fire in city’s west end

A North Battleford family managed to escape a sudden fire in their home Wednesday evening.

At around 5:40 p.m., North Battleford firefighters responded to the blaze on Cousins Dr. near 16th Ave.

Rochelle Wagner, who was home with her children at the time, said she left the house with her kids in tow as soon as she discovered fire coming from one of the bedrooms. She started throwing water on the fire to put it out, but when it spread to the bed’s boxspring, she decided it wasn’t safe to stay.

“My babies were out; I needed to get out,” she said. “I’m very thankful that I was able to get all six of my children out of that home… What means the most to me is my children.”

Wagner said her boyfriend was at work at the time.

The family, who were renting the property, lost many of their possessions, which hadn’t been insured, and Wagner said she doesn’t know where they will stay.

“I’m still so very shocked. We are just very happy we were out,” she added.

North Battleford Fire Dept. Capt. Jordan Rowswell said crews were able to quickly knock down the blaze, which was contained to the one room.

“We could see smoke coming out of the eaves of the house, and the flames through the front bedroom window,” he said. “Crews made an aggressive interior attack, and put out the fire pretty quick.”

Teams also searched the building to ensure there was no one still inside.

Rowswell said the important piece is that everyone managed to get out in time.

“This is the best outcome for a horrible situation,” he said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
