North Stars happy to help in community

Oct 23, 2018 | 5:00 PM

The Battlefords North Stars decided to make the most of the sunny October weather when they went out garbage-picking Monday afternoon.

Jennifer Whyte, Marketing and Office Manager for the North Stars, said the whole idea came together when Stars’ head coach, Brayden Klimosko got a hold of her on the weekend and, taking note of the nice forecast, suggested they get the players together to go do some good in the community.

After picking up garbage bags and gloves, the boys were sent out on their way and told to pick their location.

“It was pretty fun, the guys actually kind of enjoyed it, they thought it wasn’t too bad at all,” Elijah Loon-Stewardson said. “Guys were laughing and joking around while doing it, having a good time throughout the process, so it made for a pretty good [afternoon].”

Loon-Stewardson went on to say that not only does a strong community presence bode well for the North Stars as an organization, but it does so for the comradery of the team as well; something the veteran said is imperative to continued success on the ice this season.

“That time together is huge. The closer you are away from the rink, the better you’re going to be on the ice, I’m a strong believer in that. I try to hang out with the guys as much as possible really just to be closer to them,” he said.

Whyte said the team’s contributions to the community provide an opportunity for residents of the Battlefords and area to see a different side of the club and get to know them as people in addition to the players they see on game day.

“I think it makes such an impact for the community to see these boys because they’re not just a hockey team, they’re also members of this community or representing this community,” she said. “To see them out in schools playing street hockey with kids or reading to kids, cleaning up the community or anything like that I think it just shows that they want to be here and want to be seen in a positive light, not just as hockey players but as individuals.”

In addition to echoing Whyte’s statements, North Stars head coach and GM Brayden Klimosko believes helping out in different ways around the community is the least the team can do to repay the support from the area.

“I’ve been overwhelmed with the support we’ve had on game days. In the middle of harvest on a Wednesday, we’re getting over 700 fans; that doesn’t happen everywhere, he said. “We’re very fortunate to be receiving the support we are from our fans locally as well as the business support side of it. We’ve got to give back in any way possible.”

Klimosko said he hopes to hear from members of the community as it pertains to future opportunities for his team to get involved in local events.

“I want people to know they can reach out to me and stop by the office, or send me an email – it’s listed on the website — and see if we can get some guys [to their event], Klimosko said. “Just like we’re developing players, we’re developing humans as well and there’s nothing better than getting those guys in the community as much as possible. “

The North Stars are back in action tomorrow night against the division-rival Kindersley Klippers, in Kindersley. Fans of the North Stars can catch all the action on 1050 CJNB with pregame at 7:15 p.m. and puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
