Battlefords Minor Hockey registration deadline approaching

Those looking to register their child for the 2021-22 Battlefords Minor Hockey season have just over a week to do so before registration late fees go into effect as of Aug. 16.

President of the Battlefords Minor Hockey Association (BMHA), Kyle Kellgren said while people will still be able to register following that time, the idea with the deadline is to get an idea of about how many kids will be taking part this year so planning can commence for the coming fall season.

“It’s much easier to plan for the season when we know the numbers,” Kellgren said. “If people are able to let us know, then we can plan teams and leagues and kind of give all the division directors some guidance of how they’re going to do their season so they know the numbers of the kids within their division.”

Kellgren said despite the cancelation of the season last year due to the pandemic, the number of players registered to this point in the off-season remains steadily in line with years prior.

“I think we’re about the same as where we’ve always been, and I think there’s still probably some people still waiting to see with what happened last year too,” he said. “[Because of that] we’ll probably get a few that will late register once we get closer to the start of the year, but we’re headed for a good season and just got to get going.”

The minor hockey season officially came to a close last year province-wide November 27. While some teams were still able to practice in small groups, Kellgren said they’re looking forward to a return to a full season this year without restrictions.

“Whether you’re the first-year kid or the last-year kid, it’s exciting that our leagues are going to get going again this year,” he said. “The players are really excited to compete and it should be a great season and hopefully everyone just keeps doing what we need to do to make it happen.”

Barring any changes in the coming months, the hockey season is scheduled to return in full force, without any masking or crowd capacity restrictions.
