Youth Theatre Camp coming to Battlefords this month

Youth in the Battlefords and area will have a chance to explore their performing arts side this summer as Artistic Nomad Productions is offering a Youth Theatre Camp Aug. 23-27.

The camp will be held at the Battlefords Community Players Clubhouse on 26^th Street in Battleford and is available for ages eight to 18 to attend.

Founder of Artistic Nomad Productions, Dannyll Challis told battlefordsNOW it’s all about providing a creative outlet for youth in the community and surrounding area, where they can hone their craft with meaningful guidance and instruction.

“It’s going to concentrate on acting, movement and voice, particularly for the stage for both drama productions as well as musicals,” he said. “The mornings will be spent in a class format learning from the different instructors, and then the afternoon will be spent creating a small piece that we will then showcase at the end of the week.”

Participants will be required to bring along their own lunch, as classes will run Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Challis said the camp also provides a chance for youth in the community with a passion for the arts to be able to do what they enjoy while also reconnecting with others.

“I really feel that the youth of the province, and of course of the Battlefords, have really taken the hit [with the pandemic],” he said. “With many [students] online learning in schools, they may not have seen their friends, and their dance recitals and sports had largely been cancelled over the last year too, so this is a great chance for the youth to get out and get active together.”

Challis said depending on the interest generated for the camp this summer, they could potentially look at doing other, similar events come the fall.
