RCMP Report: Man fleeing police arrested for possession, other charges

Jul 28, 2021 | 1:32 PM

Battlefords RCMP have arrested and charged a 21-year-old male with multiple offences this week.

Police attempted to stop a vehicle early in the morning on July 24 in North Battleoford which had been driving dangerously. The vehicle fled from the scene, but was located a short time later on 105th Street and the suspect was taken into custody. A stun gun was found during the search, which Sgt. Neil Tremblay said wasn’t far from a police Taser.

“Some people can find commercial ones,” he said. “The one he had was illegal.”

Quarte Merasty is charged with flight from police, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a prohibited weapon and operation of a vehicle while impaired. He also faces three counts of breach of probation. Merasty made his first appearance in North Battleford Provincial court on Monday.

This was one of four charges related to impaired driving that the detachment faced this past week.

Assault investigations, vehicle thefts

Two instances of assault occurred since last week where bear mace was used. The first occurred on July 24, where a 36-year-old male was arrested in Battleford for outstanding warrants and had bear mace in his possession. The man will also face new charges in connection with the offence when he appears in court on September 20, including one count of methamphetamine possession.

The other, a call of a male being assaulted with bear mace on the 800 block of 106th Street in North Battleford, came shortly after 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday. A suspect has been identified and the investigation is still ongoing and charges are currently pending, as Tremblay said they still have statements to take.

While unrelated, these are yet another addition to incidents involving the use of bear mace in the community. Tremblay said they’ve tried to address the ease of distribution for the product given that it’s illegal to possess bear mace aside for during hiking and hunting excursions.

“It’s quite easy to attain,” Tremblay said. “Whether it’s here, Saskatoon or anywhere else in the province.”

The incident where a man was abducted and assaulted is also still under investigation. There were 13 assault investigations in total since July 21.

Battlefords RCMP are also on the lookout for five stolen vehicles. These include:

  • A grey 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan (Saskatchewan License 923-MEA) reported stolen from the Mosquito First Nation on July 21
  • A black 2001 Dodge Ram (Saskatchewan License 723-MHI) reported stolen from the Cochin area on July 22.
  • A grey 2010 GMC Terrain (Saskatchewan License 055-KJD) reported stolen from a rural location near North Battleford on July 22.
  • A blue 1984 Pontiac Trans Am (Saskatchewan License 870-LNB) reported stolen from the 1200 block of 102nd Street in North Battleford on July 25.
  • A blue 1997 Ford F150 Supercab (Saskatchewan License 921-LZK) reported stolen from Panton Avenue on July 27.

Tremblay said they have not seen any information at this time leading them to believe the incidents could be connected.

“No similar names have popped up yet, but that could still change,” he said.

Other files

The detachment fielded 543 calls for service in total over the past week. This includes 10 break and enter investigations, 12 Mental Health Act investigations, 12 traffic collisions and seven missing person’s cases, with just one active case remaining. Skyler Tinker, the 13-year-old who was originally reported missing back in May, is still evading efforts to locate him and is believed to still be in or around Saskatoon.
