RCMP Report: calls down, assaults result in arrests

Jul 21, 2021 | 2:54 PM

Battlefords RCMP saw a drop in total calls for service this past week, but still dealt with several arrests, including a male in the Cochin district wielding a machete.

Police arrested 27-year-old Chandler Mooswa of Moosomin First Nation July 14, after a report came in that he had entered a yard and begun to stab at the door of the residence while making back-handed threats towards the caller. Fortunately when the RCMP arrived, he was completely cooperative.

Sgt. Neil Tremblay said it was fortunate that no one was injured. According to the report, Tremblay said this was a case as much of intoxication and the suspect not really knowing what he was doing, “but obviously, walking down any street with a weapon of that nature is going to be concerning to people,” Tremblay said.

Mooswa is charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, mischief to property and failing to comply with an undertaking, which applies when someone is before the court for a different matter and is required to keep the peace. He appeared in North Battleford court on July 15.

In another case recently, officers responded to a call on July 17, where a complainant located her previously reported stolen vehicle and was reportedly stabbed in the process of attempting to retrieve it. The suspect, 33-year-old Kendra Frank, then fled in the stolen car on a grid road east of the city before later being located and arrested by police. Tremblay said there’s an indication that the two subjects in the incident knew each other.

“That could be what precipitated the victim feeling confident in intervening to retain her vehicle,” he said. “Fortunately, the victim wasn’t seriously hurt and we were able to apprehend the suspect quite quickly that evening.”

Frank is charged with assault with a weapon and is also in violation of her Conditional Sentence Order. Those work like a term of incarceration, but individuals may serve portions of sentencing in the community with various conditions placed on them as a result of lower risk factors. She made her first appearance in North Battleford court on Monday and the female victim sustained a minor leg injury from the incident.

Minor vehicle theft decrease important, teen still missing

There were 18 assault investigations in total last week out of the 524 calls for service. There were also six vehicle thefts and eight break and enter investigations, including the theft of a dark green 2011 Polaris side-by-side and a 2011 Precision Trailer in North Battleford. Police are also looking for a black 2009 Chevrolet Silverado with a Saskatchewan license plate of 151 LMV. It was reported stolen from a residence on the Mosquito First Nation July 19.

Tremblay said the slight decrease in calls is good to see, but still stressed the importance of motorists taking precautions. This is in part to how frequently a vehicle theft turns into something more serious.

“Often those vehicles are stolen and turn up in high profile incidents,” Tremblay said. “Just this week as an example, the female victim was assaulted trying to get a vehicle back.”

“If the numbers are an indication that they’re on their way down, great, but I’m not going to put too much stock into one week.”

Teen still missing

The search for 13 year-old Skyler Tinker is ongoing, the only active missing persons case of the 10 Battlefords RCMP had last week.

Tremblay said the North Battleford teenager continues to post on social media and is believed to be in or around Saskatoon. However, he continues to evade police. Tremblay said they’re constantly communicating with Saskatoon and trying to keep his name in the media so someone might recognize him.

“If people who know him see him, please notify us or Saskatoon Police,” he said. “Hopefully, we can track him down in the coming days here.”

This past week Battlefords RCMP also had one health/COVID violation investigation, 18 Mental Health Act investigations, four charges relating to impaired driving and 10 traffic collisions reported.

Anyone with information on any incident can call the detachment, 310-RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
