RM of Medstead issues fire ban for municipality

Jul 13, 2021 | 12:19 PM

The Rural Municipality of Medstead has issued a fire ban due to very dry conditions in the area.

Burning of outdoor fires is not permitted, as well as controlled burns, fireworks, camp fires and fire pits. The ban is in place until there is significant rainfall and conditions improve.

Gerald Boyd, RM of Medstead’s retired fire chief, asks people not to engage in any fires at all for the time being with conditions being so dry.

He also asks people to not throw out any cigarettes into the grassy areas, for example, that could cause a fire.

“Be very careful,” he said.

People should also make sure they don’t run ATVs into tall grasses as the heat from the vehicle can spark a fire.

Boyd said the RM of Medstead had a small grass fire two weeks ago, but managed to put it out.

“It wasn’t too serious. [People] were burning garbage, and it got away,” he said.

North of the RM of Medstead, in another municipality, there is currently an issue with a forest fire, so Boyd wants to make sure the RM of Medstead stays safe.

While there was some rain in the area on July 11, he said it still wasn’t adequate enough to improve conditions.

“We didn’t even get enough to settle the dust,” Boyd said.
