Local artist Hochbaum honoured with a Saskatchewan Craft Council award

There’s good news for local artist Heather Hochbaum who was named the recipient of the 2021 Saskatchewan Craft Council’s Award for Excellence in Quilting.

She was recognized for her quilt project entitled “I Am Coming Home” (shown below) in the Dimensions 2021 Awards.

“It’s an honour,” Hochbaum said. “I certainly wasn’t expecting it. There seemed to be some pretty stiff competition.”

The Saskatchewan Craft Council says the Award for Excellence in Quilting is presented for a work that displays outstanding design, artistry, and workmanship in quilting. The award, valued at $500, is sponsored by the Saskatoon Quilters Guild.

All the recipients of this year’s awards were announced in an event broadcast June 29 that is available for viewing online.

Hochbaum’s piece was originally selected for the Dimensions provincial juried art show as announced in the spring. The show is held every second year and tours for a two-year period.

The Dimensions exhibition received 130 submissions from across the province this year. Only 35 hand-crafted works were selected for the provincial tour.

Hochbaum said the design for her piece is based on the traditional log cabin block quilt pattern but done in a non-traditional way.

The Battleford artist, who has been involved in quilting for about 40 years, said she wanted to create the mood of being unsettled and feeling discomfort in this piece by incorporating strong colours as part of the unusual design.

She said she attempted to depict the feeling of “not being on firm ground,” showing how many are experiencing the pandemic situation.

Hochbaum started the project in January 2021. The work is part of her series reflecting on the COVID-19 situation.

She relates the “I Am Coming Home” theme is symbolic of the home as being “our safe place.”

Hochbaum thanks Leah Garven, curator and manager of Galleries at the City of North Battleford, for her help with the online submission process to first have the project considered for the Dimensions show. She is also grateful to her fellow artists at ARC Creative Studios for encouraging her to submit her project.

Hochbaum is currently taking part in the ARC Creative Studios show at the Allen Sapp Gallery, Lower Level, in North Battleford running now until July 17. She has three pieces in the exhibition.
