Sixteen-year-old appears in court to face robbery and gun charges

Jul 5, 2021 | 4:00 PM

A 16-year-old boy facing a number of weapons related charges muttered the words “innocent til proven guilty” when his charges were discussed Monday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

He was one of three people charged following incidents northwest of Prince Albert on June 19. Shots were fired by the suspects at two different rural properties and a number of items were stolen.

Crown Prosecutor Jon Morrall stated on the record he would be seeking an adult sentence, if the accused was convicted.

The youth, who cannot be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, appeared by phone from the Prince Albert RCMP detachment. He was ultimately remanded and is scheduled to make his next court appearance on July 9.

In the early morning hours of June 19, a truck, an ATV, and four firearms were reported stolen from buildings on a rural property. The suspects then entered the home, where they were confronted by the owner, and a shot was fired through a window into the home as the suspects fled. Those inside the residence were not physically injured.

Later that evening, the suspects were spotted in the stolen truck, which was stuck in a ditch on grid road 788. Police said shots were fired at two members of the public before the suspects took off in another truck. It drove into a field and the suspects then ran off towards a residence.

They were later tracked down with the assistance of a police dog unit and help from the Prince Albert Police Service.

The youth also has outstanding charges from incidents on June 19, and was awaiting trial for other matters at the time of his arrest.

Breana Daniels, 26, from Mistawasis First Nation was one of the two co-accused and is scheduled to make her next court appearance on July 14.
