North Stars in search of third-straight win

Sep 28, 2018 | 3:30 PM

The Battlefords North Stars currently hold a 3-3 record through their first six games this season, thanks to a strong showing in Warman at the league showcase where the team won both of their games.

The Stars will head into Friday night’s contest against the Estevan Bruins, aiming to win their third consecutive game, and pick up a bit of retribution in the process against a team that ended their season in the semi-finals of the SJHL playoffs last season.

The Bruins are also 3-3 through their first six games and are looking to try to snap a three-game losing streak that has seen them get outscored by a combined 12-5 margin through those three games.

MacGregor Sinclair enters action for the North Stars having scored four goals in his last five games. Sinclair’s linemates for the showdown with the Bruins are not expected to change much, as the Irma, AB native will find familiar faces, Matthias Urbanski on his left and fellow Albertan, Regan Doig on his right.

Urbanski leads the team in points with eight, and has not been held off the scoresheet since the first game of the year, scoring at a torrent pace in the five games since.

The veteran line that saw Braydon Buziak at center with Owen Lamb and Elijah Loon-Stewardson on his wings also seems to have caught the coach’s eye in a positive way, as the trio will remain together for the third-straight game.

Brett Gammer will take the center ice role on line three, flanked by versatile forward, Ryan Gil and young gun speedster, Dylan Esau. This is no doubt a unit whose speed and tenacity along the boards should provide a tough night on the opposition defence.

Shaye Sommerfeld will draw back into the lineup to anchor the fourth line where he’ll be joined by the fleet-of-foot Tanner Robin and Logan Spence.

On the backend, the Stars will remain without defensemen Jacob Bayne for the second straight game. Bayne’s injury is just added adversity the team must face on a blue line already without the services of top left-hand defender, Noah Form, who is out long-term, nursing an upper-body injury.

Tanner Scott, the 18-year-old defenseman who was acquired prior to the Stars’ game in Humboldt on Sept. 22 will suit up for his third game with the Stars, and second alongside franchise defenseman Cody Spagrud.

Seth Summers will remain to the left of former Saskatoon Blazers’ MVP Matthew Fletcher on an ever-dependable second unit that can get up and down the ice with aplomb.

Ryan Graville, who scored his first SJHL goal in his return to the lineup last game against Weyburn will remain a fixture on the third pair with fellow right-hand-shot, Adam Weiner.

Goaltender, Joel Grzybowski will get the start tonight as he looks for his second straight victory and third of the year overall. The man his teammates call “Gryz” is coming off a performance that saw him make 31 stops on 33 shots against the Red Wings to seal the win for his team.

Tonight’s game will be at the Civic Centre in North Battleford. Fans of the North Stars can tune into 1050 CJNB tonight at 7:15 p.m. for everything they need to know heading into action, with puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
